Edward Gibbon Wakefield played a leading role in the formation of the New Zealand Company and was Managing Director. Later he came to NZ and was a member of the first NZ Parliament. In 1997 this cartoon was commissioned by the Gallery for its exhibition "They Paved the Way" featuring people after whom Wellington streets were named.
