"Portraying New Zealanders to all New Zealand".
The New Zealand Portrait Gallery, administered from Wellington, is a national organisation promoting the display of New Zealanders through the perceptive eyes of painters, sculptors, caricaturists and photographers.
We host a programme of visiting and curated exhibitons as funding and
venues allow. We do not own our own display space, but usually in Wellington
we hire Shed 11 on the waterfront.
We host lectures and meetings and the biennial Adam Award and purchase for
and lend from our collection. We are supported by an enthusiastic Friends group.
Cdr. ( Bill) Williams was one of the founders of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, who with his wife Judy Williams helped to establish the Trust in 1990 and acted as Chairman of the Portrait Gallery Trust until 2006, when he became Trustee Emeritus.
He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Friends and contributed hugely to the NZ Portrait Gallery both in effort and donations. He is sadly missed and our condolences go to his widow, Judy, and family.
The painting, top right, of Commander Williams and his wife was generously painted for us by Freeman White on a commission by the Gallery and presented to us 13 April 2007. Also shown is a premininary pencil sketch.
See what's on and what's coming .
