Awarding the $15,000 prize at a function at the NZ Portrait Gallery 24 February 2010 judge Andrew Sayers, Director of the Australian National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, said that judging the prize was challenging due to the high standard of the 93 portraits in the final selection which he chose from the 312 entered. Sayers first judged this prize in 2002 and says the standard has ‘hugely improved’ since that time.

“The winning portrait possesses a real quality of truth”, Sayers said. “There is a strongly evident sense of rapport and trust between artist and subject, and a real quality of friendship comes through. It’s also a beautifully painted portrait with a sure sense of drawing, a sense of light and inner glow in which the audience can share”.
