NEW ZEALAND PORTRAIT GALLERY
Looking Down the Barrel - the Face of New Zealand Wine
Looking Down the Barrel - the Face of New Zealand Wine,
opened at Shed 11 on August 27 and will run until November 16. See opening night and our press release. This diverse collection brings
together winemakers from the past and present, and acknowledges the
importance of the wine industry’s contribution to our national economy and
cultural life.
The Opening
The collection of over 70 images includes historical figures who influenced
the evolution of the industry like the Busby family, Sir George Grey and
Bishop Pompallier, to charming pictures of several generations of the Corban
family at leisure in their vineyards, to specially commissioned new portraits
of contemporary winemakers.
Some of New Zealand’s best portraitists are involved in the new
commissions, including recent winners of the Adam Portraiture Award, Freeman
White (2006) and Irene Fergusson (2008) - pictured at right with her subject,
Jane Hunter - and photographers Robin Morrison and Kevin Judd. The curator is
John Saker.
