Brief Biographies of Artists A to J

Brigid Allan

Born Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, Brigid Allan is a self trained artist with a Bachelor of Science in Geology and Geomorphology. A life of mountaineering, alpine rock climbing, remote geological mapping and working with youth at risk encouraged her exploration of art as therapy. She has exhibited at Gallery Thirty Three (Wanaka) and Gallery O (Christchurch) and took part in a privately funded art project in Cuba.

Hamish Allan

After completing two degrees at Otago University, Hamish Allan worked as a physiotherapist before embarking on his artistic career. Initially concentrating on sculpture, he then changed to painting. He won the Christchurch Yellow Pages art award in 2007 and 2008 and in 2009 his work was selected for the cover art for “12 New Zealand Artists” 2010 calendar.

John Badcock

John Badcock is primarily self-taught. Whilst trained in cabinet making, he has been painting professionally for over three decades and is accomplished in both landscape painting and portraiture. He opened his own gallery in 1986. Travel to Europe and the United Kingdom extended his artistic study. He has had a wealth of solo and group exhibitions throughout New Zealand, and has received many awards including selection for the Archibald Salon des Refuse Exhibition in 2007, finalist in the Adam Portraiture Award since 2002, with a Highly Commended in 2006, and 1997/98 finalist in the James Wallace Art Award Auckland. His work is held in a number of collections throughout New Zealand including Christchurch Art Gallery, and Aigantighe Art Gallery Timaru. In December 2006 “Passing People”, an exhibition of 100 portraits by John Badcock was shown in the New Zealand Portrait Gallery.

Lucy Barker

Lucy Barker has attended numerous classes in life drawing and portraiture, and in 2005/6 she completed the Painter’s Progress and Painter’s Studio year-long courses at ArtStation in Auckland. She has participated in two group exhibitions at ArtStation and exhibits regularly with the art collective ArtFuse.

Liam Barr

Liam Barr is a full time artist with an interest in pop and neo surrealism. He has had three solo exhibitions of original works and has exhibited in public exhibitions at Whangarei Art Museum and Hastings City Art Gallery. He is represented by the Warwick Henderson Gallery, Auckland.

Seree Bayne

During 2005 to 2007 Seree Bayne studied at various studios in Berlin, Florence and France, achieving the Waterway Scholarship, Studio Escalier, France. After a year in Wellington in 2008 she studied at The Ryder Studio, Santa Fe, USA.

Pauline Bellamy

With early training and work as a graphic artist in Auckland, Pauline Bellamy moved to Central Otago and began a long career painting the South Island landscape. She was tutored by J S Parker and influenced by Toss Woollaston. A move to Dunedin in the 90s encouraged her reconnection with her interest in life drawing. Her work shows at Bellamys Gallery Macandrew Bay, Otago Peninsula.

Jeremy Bennett

A graduate of Auckland School of Architecture and a full time architect, Jeremy Bennett is a self-taught artist.

Paul Bidwell

Paul Bidwell returned to painting in 2000 after a thirty year break. In 2006 he took a sabbatical and completed a year at art school in Adelaide.

Harriet Bright

Harriet Bright attended Falmouth College of Art and then Brighton College of Art in the UK from 1991 – 1994, coming to New Zealand in 1995. A full time artist, Harriett spends three days a month working with a group of artists in Raumati. She has exhibited at Mahara Gallery, Waikanae, The N Z Academy of Fine Art, and St.Art Gallery Wellington. Her work is held at South Coast Gallery, Wellington.

Sarah Brock

Trained initially as a Graphic Designer in Johannesburg, Sarah Brock also worked as an IT Project Manager. Coming to Nelson in 2003, she was awarded a scholarship by The Learning Connexion in Wellington and completed her Art and Creativity Diploma in 2007, specialising in portraiture. Her studio is at the Refinery Artspace, Halifax St, Nelson.

André Brönnimann

A self-taught painter, André Brönnimann has won the Whanganui Telecom Art Awards four times and also the Waimarino Premier Art Award in 2008.

Jonathan Brough

After completing his studies at Whitereia Polytechnic, Jonathan Brough worked as a stained glass window designer and maker. He currently works at Weta Workshops.

Tony Brown

Tony Brown completed a BA in Visual Arts from the Manukau School of Visual Arts in 2005. He has held two solo shows: “Mask” at Lopdell House in 2007 and “In ya Face” at the Bruce Mason Centre in 2009.

Grant Bunyan

Grant Bunyan has a graphic design background and graduated from The Wellington Polytechnic School of Visual Communication and Design in 1987.

Bill Burke

Bill Burke held his first successful exhibition at the age of 19, with drawings in pencil and in pen and ink. After some years painting in watercolour, he introduced pastels and oils. His work can be seen at the Studio Gallery, Nelson.

Patrick Casey

Patrick Casey attended the Harrow School of Art in London in the mid 70’s where he was influenced by Joe Strummer and the Punk rock movement. He exhibits with Art of This World in Auckland.

Frances Charles

Since graduating from The Learning Connexion in Wellington in 2009 Frances Charles exhibited locally. In October 2009 she won both best category and the supreme art award for the North Shore City/Mairangi Arts Centre in Auckland with a photographic image.

Greg Chaston

Greg Chaston studied at the School of Design in Wellington in the mid 70s. Chaston has had various solo and group exhibitions in Wellington and Kapiti Coast and was a finalist in the Birkenhead Art Award. He has been a finalist in “The Ties that Bind” and “Twin Cities” exhibitions in Wellington. He sells his work from his own gallery, The Front Lawn Gallery at Waikanae Beach.

Meredith Collins

Meredith Collins studied at the Waikato Polytechnic and has worked as an exhibitions designer at the Waikato Museum, Te Awamutu Museum, and Robert McDougall Art Gallery. Her works are included in the Wallace Collection and the Trust Waikato Collection. She has been a finalist in the Contemporary Art Award, Wallace Art Awards, Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award, The Adam Portraiture Award, Australia’s Agendo Art Award, and she was a winner in the National Painting and Printmaking Award in 2008.

Sarah-Kay Coulter

After studying at the Elam School of Fine Arts Sarah-Kay Coulter has spent time working in design agencies in New Zealand and London. Currently she is studying towards a Post-Graduate Diploma in Secondary School Teaching.

Nick Cuthell

Trained at The Slade School of Fine Art, London 2001, The Art Students League of New York 2001 – 2003, and the Charles Cecil Studios, Florence 2007 – 2009, Nick Cuthell now divides his time between the UK, New Zealand and Italy. His exhibitions include Art Attack Toi Whakaari 2004, the Adam Portraiture Award in 2006 and 2008, Looking down the Barrel – The Face of NZ Wine 2008, and Waiting for Godot, Portraits London 2009.

Sylvia Davidson

Resident in New Zealand (from the UK) since 1957, Sylvia Davidson is a self-taught artist. In 1978 she won a Merit Award in the George Harrison Citrus Festival Award, was a finalist in the 2001 Lake Taupo Art Award, finalist in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award for 9 years, winning the Public Choice Art Award in 2000 and Best Portrait Award in 2002. She has been a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Award for the last 5 competitions.

Siân Davis

Siân Davis gained a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication (1998) and a Diploma in Ceramics (1993) as well as an Honours degree from Otago School of Art. She has twice been selected for inclusion in the Adam Portraiture Award. She is a member of the NorthArt Community Gallery, North Shore where she regularly exhibits.

Donna Demente

After two years study at Elam Donna moved to the South Island where she set up the Whitestone Artists’ collective and Grainstore Gallery in Oamaru. Since 1990 she has held many solo exhibitions including the Dunedin Public Art Gallery (1993), the Eastern Southland Public Gallery (1992 and 1994), Robert McDougall Gallery (1995), Forrester Gallery Oamaru (1996 and 98) and the Aigantighe Gallery in Timaru (1997).

Siene De Vries

Siene De Vries graduated from the Academy Minerva in Groningen in 1981 and has been resident in New Zealand since 1988. He is also a bronze sculptor with a work erected in Nelson’s Trafalgar St. Recent selected solo and group exhibitions include Allegory Art Gallery Christchurch (2002 and 7), Dobson Bashford Gallery Christchurch (2003), Galerie Mebius Noordhorn The Netherlands (2004), Edmiston Duke Gallery Auckland (2005), Orion Gallery Akaroa and Museum Mohlman Venhuizen The Netherlands (2006), and Sculpture in the Garden/Sculpture on the Peninsula (2003,5,7,9)

Janet De Wagt

Janet De Wagt has been a working artist for 20 years both in the northern hemisphere and back in New Zealand since her return in 1996.

Katarina Drengubiak

Katarina Drengubiak graduated with a Visual and Design Degree from EIT Hawkes Bay in 2009. She has worked with Unison on the project “Beautify the Bay”.

Tracy Duncan

Working from Mahana Nelson, Tracey Duncan recently graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Art and Design from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.

William Dunning

After graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Canterbury in 1983 William Dunning completed post graduate study at the Victoria College of Art in Melbourne in 1985 when he received the Sir Russell Drysdale Memorial Drawing Prize. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in New Zealand and Australia since 1985, including the 2009 NZ Portrait Gallery exhibition “Legacy: The Norrie Collection and Other Portraits from Government House”, which will tour to Whanganui and Gisborne in 2010 – 2011.

Anah Dunsheath

Anah Dunsheath studied at Elam School of Fine Arts. In 2006 she was a finalist in the second selection for Australia’s Archibald Portrait Prize, finalist in the Adam Portraiture Award, and a finalist in the James Wallace Art Awards in 2007 and 2009.

Rosalind Fair

Rosalind Fair trained at Elam School of Fine Arts and attended life drawing classes at Auckland’s Artstation. She worked with stained glass for 10 years and returned to painting in 1995. In 1997 she was a merit award winner of the Nora Holmwood Portrait Award and in 2004 was a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Award.

Jackie Fitzgerald

Born in Liverpool, Jackie Fitzgerald emigrated to New Zealand in the 1960s. After completing a 3 year Diploma in Textile Design in 1981 she worked as a designer for TVNZ and began to paint after her marriage in the 90s, using her two daughters as portrait subjects.

Gary Freemantle

Gary Freemantle graduated in 1984 with a Diploma in Fine Arts from Canterbury University. He has been awarded two major residencies; the Rita Angus Residency in 1988 and Tylee Cottage Whanganui in 1994.

Tonia Geddes

Tonia Geddes gained a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Canterbury University in 1995 and currently teaches in Wellington.

John Gillies

John Gillies studied figure drawing under the sculptor Tom Taylor. He has won various art awards including: Telecom Art Award 1992; Montana World of Wearable Arts Award 1998 and 2005 (section winner). He was a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Award in 2008 and has held several solo and invited guest exhibitions.

Maree Glass

Maree Glass completed a Bachelor of Media Arts from Wintec in 2005. She has been a finalist on several occasions in the NZ Painting and Printmaking Award. In 2008 she exhibited in group shows at Chartwell and Ida Carey Galleries, and in 2009 at La Mezz Gallery, Waikato Museum and Southwell School.

David B G Goodwin

David Goodwin has exhibited through the 1990s at Portfolio Gallery in Auckland and Ferner Gallery in Wellington.

Belinda Griffiths

After completing a Bachelor of Graphic Design majoring in illustration, Belinda Griffiths worked as a designer for a number of years before concentrating on painting.

Jon Hacon

Jon Hacon attended the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and followed a military and commercial career before concentrating on art. From January 2010 he became a full time artist and the Adam Award is his first foray into competition.

Raewyn Helms-Davis

Raewyn Helms-Davis initially trained in Graphic Design in which she had a 22 year career. In 2005 she received an Auckland East Art Award, and has exhibited at the Upstairs Gallery of Fine Art in Whitianga and Fishers Gallery in Auckland.

Paul Hooker

Paul Hooker was an art director in advertising agencies in the 1970s and 80s before moving to his own freelance business specializing in illustrations for several years. He taught part-time at a variety of art schools, and is currently teaching at Whitecliffe School of Art, South Seas Animation School and Unitec while continuing with his private and gallery work.

Gavin Hurley

Gavin Hurley graduated Bachelor of Fine Arts, Elam School of Fine Arts in 1998. He has exhibited widely at art galleries around New Zealand and in Sydney.

Paul Hutchinson

Paul Hutchinson is a self-taught artist who has exhibited widely both overseas and throughout New Zealand, winning several awards.

Deborah Illingworth

After completing a BA at Auckland University in Prehistoric Anthropology and Ancient History Deborah Illingworth gained a Certificate in Graphic Design from AUT in 1985 and worked for 10 years in the advertising industry. She moved to the Awhitu Peninsula and started to paint in 1998. She has been awarded the North Shore Art Award in 2001, the Supreme Award at the Franklin Art Awards in 2004 and has been a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Award in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008.

Michelle Irwin

Michelle Irwin, who lives on a South Island sheep farm, developed her Pointillism style while at high school where she was influenced by New Zealand artist Rae Hamon.

Kopotama Jacobson

Kopotama Jacobson began his career as an artist at the beginning of 2009. Shows include Designfesta Tokyo and The Niue Arts and Culture Festival both in 2009. His work is currently showing at the Okaioceanikart Gallery in Auckland.

David John

David John trained as an artist at the Liverpool College of Art and has his studio in Arrowtown.
