Vision: "Portraying New Zealanders to all New Zealand"

Mission Statement: "Presenting portraits of our peoples, profiles of the New Zealanders, past and present, who have shaped and continue to express the various cultures which together define our national characteristics."

NZPG does not own a large collection. With the likelihood of a permanent home at Shed 11, this may change, however a history of displaying new and existing work in a variety of galleries, has served us well.

Supporters & Sponsors: the Gallery is grateful to its supporters and sponsors.

The principles of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery were established under the enthusiastic inaugural chairmanship of Sir John Marshall in 1988. They are reflected in our mission statement and in our exhibitions, which have New Zealanders ordinary and extraordinary at their centre.

We started in 1990 in National Archives and later in a gallery, formerly used as a temporary parliamentary debating chamber.
